Drapanos Declaration on Community Exchange

Posted by jembendell on November 8, 2012

Individuals, communities and environments are the true source of our wealth and well-being.

Therefore we develop alternative means of exchange between individuals and organisations to foster more cooperative and equitable relations.

Although we may focus on our own communities, we share this principle with other communities.

Therefore we commit to work together in Greece and worldwide, to improve our practices, so that more communities connect to their own abundance.

Our efforts are part of a greater movement to make economic activity more accountable, socially beneficial and environmentally sustainable.

Our work must develop ever expanding circles of cooperation, exchange and learning.

We invite others who share these aims to join us in a growing movement and emerging profession on community exchange.

This Declaration was agreed on 11th October 2012 by participants in a two day conference on community exchange, at the ‘European Sustainability Academy (ESA) in the village of Drapanos, Crete, Greece.

  16. Congratulations on establishing this foundation for democratizing money.

Twenty years ago I created a community currency in Ithaca NY that has transacted several million dollars value. One HOUR = an hour of basic labor or $10. Professionals can charge multiple HOURS per hour, with price subject to negotiation.

My book Hometown Money explains how to start an manage such systems http://www.paulglover.org/currencybook.html and my article “Labor: the New Gold Standard” introduces an international HOUR system http://www.paulglover.org/1107.html

  17. The Alternative Exchange Network Free Economy – a new community created by the Athens-based, non-profit organisation Social Innovation Alternative Network – Free Economy and was established in March 2012 – officially endorses the Drapanos Declaration.
Greece is a beautiful, very rich country with skilled human capital and it is an incubator for social innovation in Europe. The current illequidity in the marketplace has prompted the creation of alternative, community-based sytems such as ours, the Alternative Exchange Network Free Economy. Through this network and the on-line http://network.free-economy.gr/about/faq/english/ platform, individuals and local businesses have the opportunity to exchange goods and services with each other using our “Enallaktika” (Alternatives) unit or by a combination of Alternatives and euros. At the same time, members of our growing community may choose to pro-actively participate in hard-needed, local, voluntary, grassroots, solidarity initiatives.
Please note that one of our co-founders, Peter Michel Heilmann, was an invited speaker/delegate http://www.eurosustainability.org/en/esa.htm in/of the inaugural ESA International Sustainability Summit in October 2012. We are excited about and wholeheartedly support the initiatives, actions and work of the newly-opened, beautiful and ecological, European Sustainability Academy, a unique management teaching and research centre on the isle of Crete!
We wish to express our interest in collaborating with like-minded individuals and networks in Greece and world-wide, as stated in the Drapanos Declaration (“Our work must develop ever expanding circles of co-operation, exchange and learning” and “Therefore we commit to work together in Greece and world-wide, to improve our practices, so that more communities connect to their own abundance.”).

Therefore, we are most pleased to be part of this growing movement and look forward to forming synergies and exchanging best practices as well as ideas with other Drapanos Declaration signatories.

    Sincerely,

    Peter Michel Heilmann
    Markos Perrakis
    Eleni Thanou
    Haralambia Boleti
